Hi my 81 xj 650 seems to run a little hotter then it use to. i changed oil types from yama lube to rotella t 15w 40 and took the exhaust off and sanded the rust that was on them and put them back on. the pipes coming out of the engine started bluing a little. its still running great no problem there not making any loud valve noise. i thought of trying syn blend oil. its not overheating just running hotter then it use too. oil level is good. maybe i'm a little peranold any suggestings..

Get a Spark Plug Reading and see what those plug look like after you've been out for a couple hours.

That ought to tell us something.

Sounds to me like your running lean. The pipes shouldn't blue.

Forget about riding around for a couple hours ... just pull the Spark Plugs.

What are the Plugs telling us about the way that engine's running???

i rode the bike for about 100 miles pulled the plugs and they all looked the same grey top and the insulator still white with small amount of gray on them. NGK BP7ES plugs been in the bike for two years now. so if the bikes running lean it will cause hotter run blue exhaust. lean on air or fuel.

Your running lean on Fuel ... getting back to the exhaust ... are they YAMAHA Pipes or aftermarket?

You hope to see a little a little TAN or BROWN on the Plugs.
You run too lean and you use the OIL SHEEN in the Cylinder for fuel; too.
The Combustion Chamber stays too hot ... burned valves or worse can happen.

    Are the Carbs STOCK?
    Modified?
    Jet Kits?
Anything done that would require putting-in Hotter Jets???
    Mods?
    Pods?
    Header?

yes yamaha pipes ,carbs stock ,no mods ,no jet kits ,no pods, stock 4 into 2 exhaust. it seem to start running hotter after i put the exhaust system back on but if somehow somethink cloged i'd lose power it still runs great with alot of power. now i think about it my idle would drop below 900 rpms the other day while i was riding i turned the idle up a little to keep it from idleing down to low were it would stop running while stopped.
