Hi all , does anyone , particularly aussie members, know where I can get 4 sets of standard piston rings for the xj900F ( 891cc motor ) for a reasonable price. The dealers want something approaching a house deposit for the set . Would greatly appreciate any info regarding a more reasonable (cheaper ) source. ( Chacal only has the 853cc rings )

    cheers ,Murray

Murray, these "900" cc engines weren't made in very large numbers and aftermarket parts are non-existent.

I've pretty much decided to bore my 900 to suit 400cc pistons and use std pistons and rings to suit. It will come out cheaper than taking my first born to the local dealership for a set of rings.

You can also source custom made rings for almost any size piston. There are a number of sources for these in the US and I've gotten rings for old aircraft engines by just sending a sample and giving them the bore size, not cheap though.

There used to be a guy here in Brisbane that stocked a wide range of rings and we could get almost any size from him for MX bikes but I haven't been able to find him, I'm assuming he's retired.

By the way, can we presume you have measured things to confirm you actually need new rings?

Yes indeed , after professional hone ,every thing is close to the standard limit, so new rings were suggested by the pros. The best I can come up with is $98 a set from Teammoto at Blacktown, and yes 2 in the country ,but plenty in stock in Japan,so obtaining them no problem. Thanks all, just have to sell the kids for scientific experiments again ,cheers ,Murray

By set I assume you mean that is for 1 cylinder? My Yamaha bloke went to great pains to explain that often people mistake a "set" as enough for 4 cylinders ie total cost was $400! Unless I got the story wrong?

A set is for one piston.

You had me wondering there for a while Adrian, so went down to the shed to check the compliance plate. Definately gives the build date as 1/88, vin no. 2UR 000135 ( frame and engine nos. match) It is an ADR plate, so unaware what the story is there.
    cheers,Murray
