I polished my forks with a buffing wheel. They look like crome now. My question is now, should I spray them with a clear coat or apply a polish wax?

I'm a big fan of just using a good polish/wax. I like Mother's Billet Metal Polish myself.

    I polished everything aluminum.
    Didn't clear any of it.

    I do what Fitz does.
Shine it with Mothers after a wash.

    Sometimes, I re-buff.
When U do, ... I use GREEN Rouge or ZAM.

The ZAM is a Jewelery and Precious Stone Polish.
It gives the Aluminum a sparkling, mirror-like finish that looks like glass,
The tube of ZAM will last you a lifetime.
A tiny bit goes a long, long way.

Yes, don't seal it after all the hard work. If you apply lacquer, you'll be back to square one in no time.

I know I shouldn't, as it's an abrasive, but I use Autosol on all my naked aluminium to freshen it up now and again.

Autosol is good. It does the same thing as the Mother's product I mentioned, fine polishing then leaves a protectant behind.

I've absolutely SWORN by Solvol Autosol for over 40 years; but with the disappearance of the last true Britbike shops it's getting harder and harder to find here in the good ol' USA.

Then I discovered Mother's Billet Metal Polish. It's even finer than Autosol, and also leaves a very nice protectant behind. Plus it's available about anywhere from auto parts to big-box discount stores here.

I'd say I'll trade you a jar of Mother's for a nice fat new tube of Autosol, but we'd probably both get arrested for shipping suspicious substances.

I should take a pic of my sorry little ragged end of a tube of Autosol, I'd pitch it but there might be a couple more grams to be squeezed out.

Just leave them bare and give them a good polish now and then. I wipe the crud of my KZ forks after every ride with some Meguire's detailing wax.

Beside those forks are probably so slick now you would have to sand them a bit to get any kind of clear product to stick to them.

I tried Autosol and I found it to be a little too course. I have ended up using a good hard. I was thinking of anodizing them clear or coloured. They fit in my tank but they look good now I will be going with a wax job.

172 views, it looks like an interesting topic to a lot of us. I have been polishing aluminum bike parts for years, like others on this form. I have always clear coated after. I now believe this is not the right way to go, it always turns yellow and if it gets chipped it turns dark. Waxing is better.
As I posted, I have anodizing setup at home. Seeing that it all apart and polished, I’m thinking of anodizing it. But I don’t know what colour. So I’m going to run a poll as top what colour to do them in. Please go to this poll and vote.
