Hello! I have a 1982 xj650 and I am in the process of putting all new cables and hoses on it. It has a single caliper front brake on it and there are two brake lines on it. One is a short upper line to the master cylinder and the other is a longer one to the caliper. I was just wondering if it is possible to just use one long line?

It sure is. That was a concession to manufacturing flexibility. My Norton came with one long hose; but Norton wasn't producing umpteen-some different models of motorcycles all using basically the same front brake parts.

However, it does make it a bit cheaper on you if you decide you want to change your handlebar drastically.

It is possible, but not recommended.

It works just like the brake lines on a car. They use solid metal lines up to the caliper, then just a short rubber line. If they used only rubber lines it would take a few hundred feet more to stop, IF the line didn't blow.

On the XJ, using that distribution line lessens the amount of rubber line that expands as you squeeze the lever. The short metal line improves braking performance quite a bit.

Yeah I put drag bars on it and now the upper line is way to long and its just cheaper to use one long braided line than it is to buy two sizes. So there should be no problem with using one line instead of two then right?

It does not have any metal lines, They are both rubber lines that come together at a metal block behind the yamaha plastic cover on the forks.
