I think i found cheap master cylinder for xj with drag bars!

What about bore size? Does it compare to that of an XJ750 ?

 

If you need a "flat" Yamaha master cylinder for a single-disc system, the one from any 550 will work just fine. (Despite the styling, the 550 Seca and Max used the same handlebar.)

 

Thanks Fitz, but it has to be for dual discs. Gonna go for SS lines once the new MC is in... Takes a bit too long for the bike to stop with my 240 pounds on top

If it has to be for dual discs, then the M/C from the 650 Seca (European XJ650) is also nice and flat, and made for dual discs. As popular as the XJ650 was over there, one of those should be easy to locate.

What did you guys finally go with?

My XJ750 MC was totally gummed up, I purchased a Rebuild kit but I could never get the OEM to work again. So now i am looking for a good replacement.

I purchased a Set of Dual SS lines, all of the washers, banjo bolts, etc.... as well as a Front Master Cylinder from a 1984 Yamaha FJ1100.
I had to then get a rebuild kit for it, buying these used MC's just seem like a big hassle, If I could find a good alternative that is known to work I would like to purchase a new one.

 

What are the bore specs on the 550 maxim?... fitz?
Im definitely interested in saving some money and simply buying a new master cylinder vs the rebuild kit sounds like a good way.

Also, how would one wire the brake light switch to one of these $20 jobbies?

Found my answer by digging through Chacals parts guide. The OEM 550 also uses a 14MM bore.

 

and the kit is only like <$30 and it's only held in by one e-clip. What's the savings again? Not having to actually fix anything?

How WOULD one wire a brake light switch to a $20 M/C? (Not easily, it's a trick question.)

I'd trust a properly rebuilt stocker over a cheapo any day. Especially when my life depends upon it, which is often the case.

(Good quality rebuild kits usually work fine if installed correctly. eBay kits, not so much.)

The MikesXS item seems like the most viable alternative, but I gotta try to make it fit an XJ750... The other two are aftermarket items with all the blessings and curses that may follow...

 

^I used the MikesXS one Erman linked to on my '82 Seca 750 (dual discs). I have "superbike bend" bars on the bike. The brake light switch wiring was a direct connection (same plugs). Works great!

Yeah, Raven... I wanna go for bars similar to those found on adventure bikes. And if I understood it correctly, this MC will fit a horizontal mount...

 

I am looking at getting the MikesXS ones that were linked, but I just want to be clear on a couple thing...

Right now I have a single disc brake with a 14mm piston; the ones from MikesXS can be used with either Single or Dual disc, but has a 16mm piston. From reading this thread I gathered that using a larger bore piston is ok, am I correct?

And... I am going to be putting drag bars on, so the one from MikesXS should work on them because it is made to sit horizontal, not at an angle?

Smaller bore = Less effort required at the lever but more level travel.

Bigger bore = More effort required at the lever, but less lever travel.

Some say the smaller bore gives a finer feel so you can modulate pressure a bit better. Lever travel may be a bit more than you like if you need to operate two calipers.

Thanks for the info. I just ended up getting one from Chacal. It was a couple bucks more and didn't include the brake light switch. But I was so satisfied with my last order from him I played it safe. Since I can ask him questions prior to placing my order I can be positive I am ordering the correct parts.

Swapped out my brake lines and pads a week or 2 ago. Now it's time to get the proper MC for my drag bars. I'll let you know how it works out.

 

so has anyone used a cheap master cylinder from ebay that can offer some kind of review?
