before i make the plunge on this 'high quality' Hong Kong lever assembly, i wanted to check with the wise men on this forum to make sure it'll work.

first up is the front brake master cylinder with brake switch (this is the one im most concerned with, especially banjo bolt size)

let us know if you decide to go ahead with this!
    a thought occurs tho:
YZ bikes are single caliper/rotor setups - will this drive a dual rotor/caliper setup? i dont know offhand what bore diameter the stock Master Cylinder is, but as long as its close/same it should be fine hey

super interested in both of these. how does that pitch look for drag bars? i was looking at this

    and this

but you have me beat on price there.

Re: I think i found cheap master cylinder for xj with drag b

ok, ive searched all over for a banjo bolt thread pitch size and piston bore diameter for the xj650 with no luck. :? DOES ANYBODY KNOW??? i emailed the seller whether its for a single or dual caliper setup so we'll see what they say about that (hopefully i can understand their response  ).

captaintrap, that clutch and brake lever set is SWEET. i thought of using a set off an r6 or any other bike with 7/8" bars but i think i prefer an attached MC instead of a remote one. BTW your build was one of the first to make me obsessed with bobbing this bike

Re: I think i found cheap master cylinder for xj with drag b

thanks man, my bike is inspired by other bobbers ive seen on this site through my own interpretation. im glad i can contribute that sentiment to other xj'ers.

i agree with you about the attached MC especially if you are bobbing it due to the low profile of it. i actually think i may buy the one you posted if there are more than one. here is a post someone posted in my thread about this issue.

    by GFunk:

Look for a radial GSXR MC, they all have a 3/4 in Bore (~19mm) which is going to be super tight (because its meant to push two calipers) or you can check out an R6 MC which I believe has a 16mm bore (smaller caliper piston than the GSXR) and will give you a more progressive feel. Then if you want to pic up some SS brake lines I'll split them with you since we both only need one Smile

Either way these used OEM parts will go for a fraction of the price and should work substantially better than our OEM MC

    hope this helps

Re: I think i found cheap master cylinder for xj with drag b

okay got some info. when i asked the seller about single or dual caliper their response was "should be single"...

i pm'ed chacal for the piston bore diameter and banjo bolt thread pitch of the stock MC and they are 14mm and m10x21mmx1.25tp respectfully.

this means the 'I Wanna Buy' MC piston bore is 1.3mm smaller than our stock MC. the banjo bolts are the same.

i think the auction ends tomorow, april 30, and i dont know if theyre going to relist or not. most likely they will though. i also tried submitting best offers of $12, $14, and $16 and was declined immediately so dont even bother. i think im just going to buy it tonight since it wont get here for a month anyway.

now what do you all think of the loss in piston bore? think it will affect braking dramatically?

ok fellas, the california seller's reply was "This does fit 7/8 bars. However, we have just ran out of these, more will be available in about 2 weeks.
    Thank You."
    .........#&$%IN 'A

i emailed this guy about his product (same thing just no lever, but hes in CA) his reply was "Sorry,We can't disassemble the master cylinder to measure the piston bore. What kind of the bike you have?? "
    .....oh boy

sorry about the bad news. if i hear anything new ill let you guys know. in the meantime, does ANYBODY have an opinion about the smaller piston size??

Watch Ebay for a MC off a 900 Seca; that's the one I got (not that I've had time to install it yet). The MC is horizontal instead of angled, and the piston is the right diameter (as the 900 had a dual-caliper setup).

Banjo bolts come in a variety of different thread pitches! So if your "stock" banjo bolts don't seem to want to thread into another master cylinder (or caliper), don't just keep on torquin!

Not a good idea to use a master cylinder with a smaller bore than original. Going the other way is typically okay (bigger bore than stock).

One thing to be aware of on the XJ650 Maxim and the 1983 XJ750 Maxim models is those swoopy handlebars are designed to use a "tilted reservoir" master cylinder.....the "tilt" allows the m/c to remain somewhat level in the stock location of those m/c's on those handlebars.

Using a "level" reservoired m/c on those swoopy bars, or using the "tilted reservoir" m/c on flat baars, is not such a hot idea, as under certain conditions, the fluid port in the reservoir could become uncovered and suck air into the system: which means, at best, a brake bleeding event, or at worse, no brakes when needed most (i.e. a skull-bleeding event!).

Ok so us xj650s who have converted to drag bars are still looking for a viable solution for aftermarket MCs. Chacal could you chime in with a confirmed MC bore size? Thanks

I plan on getting a MC off a yamaha grizzly 660. It is flat and the grizzly has dual rotors, so it should suffice for the dual rotors I am adding to my 650.

What about bore size? Does it compare to that of an XJ750 ?

If you need a "flat" Yamaha master cylinder for a single-disc system, the one from any 550 will work just fine. (Despite the styling, the 550 Seca and Max used the same handlebar.)

Thanks Fitz, but it has to be for dual discs. Gonna go for SS lines once the new MC is in... Takes a bit too long for the bike to stop with my 240 pounds on top :p

I sure hope it works out for you.

I know you've heard that old saying "you get what you pay for".

Well...Iv'e had plenty of years on this planet to know that 7-9 times
out of ten I'll regret low balling, and taking a chance that a cheap
brake that might fail under hard, emergency conditions gives me the willies.

If it has to be for dual discs, then the M/C from the 650 Seca (European XJ650) is also nice and flat, and made for dual discs. As popular as the XJ650 was over there, one of those should be easy to locate.

Re: I think i found cheap master cylinder for xj with drag b

What did you guys finally go with?

My XJ750 MC was totally gummed up, I purchased a Rebuild kit but I could never get the OEM to work again. So now i am looking for a good replacement.

I purchased a Set of Dual SS lines, all of the washers, banjo bolts, etc.... as well as a Front Master Cylinder from a 1984 Yamaha FJ1100.
I had to then get a rebuild kit for it, buying these used MC's just seem like a big hassle, If I could find a good alternative that is known to work I would like to purchase a new one.

What are the bore specs on the 550 maxim?... fitz?
Im definitely interested in saving some money and simply buying a new master cylinder vs the rebuild kit sounds like a good way.

Also, how would one wire the brake light switch to one of these $20 jobbies?

    >>Edit

Found my answer by digging through Chacals parts guide. The OEM 550 also uses a 14MM bore.

and the kit is only like <$30 and it's only held in by one e-clip. What's the savings again? Not having to actually fix anything?

How WOULD one wire a brake light switch to a $20 M/C? (Not easily, it's a trick question.)

I'd trust a properly rebuilt stocker over a cheapo any day. Especially when my life depends upon it, which is often the case.

(Good quality rebuild kits usually work fine if installed correctly. eBay kits, not so much.)

^I used the MikesXS one Erman linked to on my '82 Seca 750 (dual discs). I have "superbike bend" bars on the bike. The brake light switch wiring was a direct connection (same plugs). Works great!

Yeah, Raven... I wanna go for bars similar to those found on adventure bikes. And if I understood it correctly, this MC will fit a horizontal mount...

I am looking at getting the MikesXS ones that were linked, but I just want to be clear on a couple thing...

Right now I have a single disc brake with a 14mm piston; the ones from MikesXS can be used with either Single or Dual disc, but has a 16mm piston. From reading this thread I gathered that using a larger bore piston is ok, am I correct?

And... I am going to be putting drag bars on, so the one from MikesXS should work on them because it is made to sit horizontal, not at an angle?

    Thanks. ~Chris 1982 XJ650 Maxim J

Re: I think i found cheap master cylinder for xj with drag b

Smaller bore = Less effort required at the lever but more level travel.

Bigger bore = More effort required at the lever, but less lever travel.

Some say the smaller bore gives a finer feel so you can modulate pressure a bit better. Lever travel may be a bit more than you like if you need to operate two calipers.

    @Erman

Thanks for the info. I just ended up getting one from Chacal. It was a couple bucks more and didn't include the brake light switch. But I was so satisfied with my last order from him I played it safe. Since I can ask him questions prior to placing my order I can be positive I am ordering the correct parts.

Swapped out my brake lines and pads a week or 2 ago. Now it's time to get the proper MC for my drag bars. I'll let you know how it works out.
