Found these peices in the pan. This is my spare motor and It ran fine but has begun slipping out of 1st while sitting at a light with the clutch in. I found one of the pieces in a position that may have caused 1st not to full engage. Im betting the pieces are not transmission parts, but where are they from? any ideas?

Looking up into the bottom of the motor I just cant see anything that looks like this belongs to.

Primary cam chain guide. You can fish all the pieces out the little 'fishing hole' behind the left side shifter cover, but you're gonna hafta split the case to replace it.

Deja Vu all over again! I took this picture for another guy of one I have. It's a horrible picture and the part is not cleaned, but that's the part. If you need one them send me a PM and let me know.

I think letitrides has the right part.

So is that piece part of the starter, part of the cam chain guide or both?

The parts exposion shows it in the starter section, but where it fits into the whole scheme Im kinda unclear

it's the same thing.....it goes inthe middle of the engine. your piece is from just slightly off-center to the right if you were to try and find that section on the picture above. Look for the one tooth that's a bit shorter than the rest, and compare that with the pic of the piece you showed us.

This motor did also have starter issues. I probably will not be tearing into it myself, I have a buddy locally that has an xj650 that he was interested in getting parts for. The motor was going along as part of that bundle but I wanted to take a look at the trans before I gave it all to him. Well at least we have a better idea of what he needs to do if he want to use this motor.

    Thanks, mystery solved.

So Im not looking for a write up or anything, but whats the time estimate for replacing this part? Are we talking complete engine disassembly?

LetItRIDE... is that beeswax in the background? haha sorry for such blasphomy question but had to ask. we have a family hobby of beekeeping & my father has been an apiarist for twenty some years

yeah, my only hypothesis would be the primary cam chain guide which LetItRIDE depicts as well

motore off - flip it upside down - split the cases.
partial disassembly but a pull out for sure.
but since its not in a frame, not too big of a deal. Ill be replacing mine soon (among other things) I been working on a GL1100 to ride while the Seca is in in surgery
in any case the jugs and all can stay on but if your going that far why not go further? I am anyway

LOL no. It's rubber mats that I work on top of. Like Horse stall mats. I can lay parts all over and they won't get scratched. The black part is raised. I would have a hell of a time trying to take some pictures on a bee farm Lmao.

Its aready out and upside down to pull the pan and check out out.

I looked in the service manual and of course the "proper" proceedure shows much more complete disassembly. Are there any shortcuts I could make use of?

Possible to just start at "section J: crankcase dissassembly" which outlines which bolts to remove in sequence to split the cases? (skips the cylinder head, alternator, clutch sections). Im pretty good at working around difficult fixes, just never been inside one of these.

If my buddy doesnt take it, then I will likely just use this as a training motor to get some experience with them.

No short cuts and you will want the factory book, if you don't already have a copy :-(
