Ok guys, I just got my service manual (haynes) for my 83 650 Maxim, and I was reading the section on replacing clutch pads and such, and I just wanted to get some clarification.

The section that covers clutch repair is included in a larger chapter that just gives full instructions for a full engine overhaul, and I wanted to get clarification on something that gets mentioned early in that chapter.

To do a clutch pad replacement and overhaul I basically just need to open the crank case and remove the clutch assembly, correct? Or is there more to getting at it than that?

Is that for the starter clutch or the main clutch for changing gear?
The starter clutch needs the crankcases splitting to get acces to remove it and change the dampers, the other main gearchange clutch just needs the side casing taking off for access.

    Main gear changing clutch.

The side of the case I remove is the right hand side, the same side where the oil is added in correct?

    Thanks bro.

It looks like once I get the E ring off of the bolt holding the clutch cable on that it just slides off, or can be pried off. Is that right?

    *edit*

Or do I need to leave that attached, and just open the case?

    Read through this: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html

Your clutch is the same as the 550/600, except it's simpler. You don't have tabbed plain plates nor a "clutch boss spring" inside a special friction plate to worry about. Your throwout shaft has a few more parts, but operates the same. What you see in the article is pretty much what you'll see inside your clutch.

If this doesn't completely clarify everything for you, ask away.
