    Hi, I have a 1982 XJ750

My Exhaust collector is in bad shape, the gaskets that fit the header pipes into the collector are not removable, one of the "rings" (or inlets?) is half-missing and has a hole, the collector itself is really rusted bad, but has no other holes and feels solid. I can't remove the mufflers! I'm afraid I'll break the collector!

Anyway, Can I use parts from a 550, 650 or 700? I see nice looking collectors on ebay, but I want to make sure it all will fit.

My header pipes look great, so I want to keep those, my mufflers are fine, one has a hole in it, so I might replace that instead of patching.

    Thanks All.

Unfortunately, the only collector box that will fit your bike is one from another 750 Maxim, '82 or '83.

The collectors from the 650 Seca and 550s are similar appearing, but actually quite different.

This guy has a set on ebay advertised as 750 and 550 ones. I would trust fitz word on it not fitting, but wonder if his are 750's or 550's. I imagine he is not sure.

I have a rusted set I could practically give you. They too have a few small holes in them. Not sure how they compare to the ones you currently have, but the options there.

It says in the description that they came off of a 83 750. I found that problem trying to locate a good set of exhaust for my 82 750 Maxim, and could not find a satisfactory collector. I got impatient and order a new kit from Jama.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like I'll live with what I have. Is there any way for a n00b like me to remove the mufflers? The clamps are all rusted (they do not come loose, but they still open at least) and the mufflers seem 'fused' to the collector.

I'm thinking if I get the mufflers off, I can use a wire wheel to strip and then apply high-temp paint on the collector to help protect it. Is that a sensible plan? I can't remove ANY of the 6 clamps, at least I'm not sure how to.

How did you order this? A quick Google search turned up nothing :(

Never mind, I found it I think. A UK site? Jama Exhaust Parts.

Actually the Jama exhuast is available from a US company in NY.

Here is the site for FosterRad. The company that sells the Jama Laser exhaust.

Yep, what Ghost said. If you order, hope you aren't in a hurry. Today makes 3 weeks since I ordered mine, and hasn't arrived. When it does, I will post some pics and feedback.

    Answers in reverse order:

The clamps don't COME OFF, unfortunately they're welded to the collector. They just open.

It's a very good plan; you can't actually SEE the collector box if the chrome shields are still there. I've done that myself; use a VHT aluminum header paint. As a matter of fact, the factory did the same thing; they painted the spots that had to be welded post-plating, to protect them.

Invest in some Kroil: http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ You're gonna need it anyway.

Loosen the muffler clamps; soak the joints with Kroil and come back in a day. Pull/twist the mufflers off.

Re: XJ 750 Exhaust Parts - Can I use similar bike model part

Man I finally gave up on finding a OEM style replacement for my 83 XJ750M and went to a 4 into one aftermarket unit. It works great but the old Midnight Maxim did loose a little of her charm

So, I sanded and painted the collector box, it looks pretty SWEET! I used black high-temperature paint (the kind used for BBQ grills).

I bought new stainless hardware for all the clamps, used anti-sieze compound on the bolts.

Now, I have a stuck bolt without a head, that's tomorrow's project. All in all, I think I put off spending $500 more this season! :)
