The title says it all. I have a 1982 XJ550 (black) with a bad title and before I go through the hassles of dealing with the DMV would like to get a feel for who needs what. I'd like to recoup my costs thus far (>$1000) but never having parted out anything I don't know what to expect.

So, here's your chance to express your needs. If I get enough interest I will part it out.

The bike's in good condition with less than 11K on it. The exhaust is in good shape as are the wheels that sport nearly new tires. Gas tank's not bad, carbs were recently rebuilt with new boots. The seat was rebuilt & recovered by Sargent Seats with new foam and a gel pad for the rider.

    Let me know.....

It's a crying shame to part-out a nice looking bike like that!

What's the hang-up getting it inspected and tagged ... Title???

Should you decide to part it out, PM me. I have a Seca but many parts will interchange. But I agree....It would be a shame to part out a looker like that!

If the bike is not stolen, you can get a title for it. Such a shame it would be to part out such a nice, clean, original bike! They aren't making 1982 550 Maxims anymore, and once they're gone, they're gone. Pm me,and I can tell you how I obtained a title for a bike that I bought that didn't have one.Best of luck to you, whatever you decide to do.
    Regards,
    Dan

If you are certain it isn't hot, then getting a title will require a little bit of work but is doable. A real waste of a fine machine to tear it apart IMHO.

My sentiments as well. Here's what happened; I got it off eBay in 9/05 from what turned out to be a Northern CO pawn shop. Fine, we drive up there to get the bike and discover that it's been stored a while and the battery is dead. I bought it for my SO and she immediately bonded with it when they pulled it from storage.

I wasn't keen on all this but I did get it for a pretty good price so I figured I'd work on it while she did her MSF course.

The bike's previous owner attempted to sell the bike prior to pawning it but the sale fell through and they used white out to cancel the transaction. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed and this doesn't make me look too sharp but at the time I didn't think the white out would be a problem and the pawn shop told me they'd assist should I have problems with the DMV.

I worked on the bike over the winter of '05 to '06 replacing many parts and hiring out what I couldn't do. We attempt to register it in the spring and that's when we were told about the bad title. I contacted the pawn shop and they couldn't recall who I was and pretty much blew me off.

A supervisor at the DMV gave us the low down on how to rectify the matter but it involves me having to post a bond and go through a lot of paperwork. This procedure may put me at risk of losing the bike back to the previous owner should they be sharp enough to understand what's going on. All they'd have to do is dispute my claim and they can get the bike back, no questions asked.

So, now you know. I've replaced the bike with a most sweet '85 XJ700, the SO is very happy, I'm happy, but I have this little 550 that sits unused in the garage. I don't like the idea of parting out anything and feel this bike would make someone a great starter or commuter bike.

I'm open to title suggestions and would appreciate your time and advice.

I'd take a shot with that Title Service in Vegas ...

For their Nevada Rubber Stamp and Paperwork ... you get a Clear Title and a Plate.

No Bond, Escrow or much beyond their $75 - 150.00 fee.

I have an XJ700 and there appears to be some difference in the tanks. That being said another member already asked and therefore has first shot at it.
    Thanks for asking though.

There's probably a lot of parts I could use, but I'd cannibalize my 550 to restore that one...

    It certainly looks prettier.
