All of us 750 Max Riders would like another Gear.
We got to play the cards we're dealt.

That means cruising down the Boulevard or Jetting along with traffic on the Interstate and doing "The Phantom Shift"!

Going like hell and trying to shift into a 6th Gear that just ain't there.

My 5th Gear isn't anything to write home about. It knocks-off
250-300 rpm's ... But, the Bike is still cranked-up with Scotty down in the Engine Room bitching about how she's doing all she's got, ... and your running 3rd in the Grand Prix behind some guy on a Harley and a a Squid on a Plastic Wrapped Bullet
approaching Mach-1, leaving you behind, back there, trying to shift into a gear the bike don't got.

If only some 6-Speed Tranny would just drop-in!!!!

I'm not the wishing type, I had a klr650 they said you couldnt gear to go faster but I did anyway. When I find a way I will let ya know and I hope I do. Isnt there an xj550 with a 6 speed tranny? Or maybe not? Its not about the extra speed, just the extra milage, cooler running and lower rpm for the highway. I tend to take very long trips. Maybe I will have to go with a custom 5th gear more of the overdrive variety. Rode to Laconia a few tmies str8 through 12-12 1/2 hours and a few thunderstorms slowing me down on that klr, and to Daytona in 2 days one way each on a cx500d. If anyone knows clue me in, thanks guys

Is there any update with this? My 81 maxim 550 had six gears.

This is kinda funny. Concours owners have six gears and sometimes look for a 7th.

Maybe these '80's bikes were all designed around 55 MPH highway speed. Heck, now even in MD I can hit 75+ without worry.

Sometimes I shift one gear down a ride for a bit, then shift up. It doesn't seem so bad then. :)

Someone on the Concourse Forum makes & sells a custom-machined 7 speed tranny for the 1000CC model, I think in the $500 range.

    A knowledgeable machinist could "re-cut" 5th gearset . . .

The "Middle Gear" set from a 900 can drop-in the case of the mid-size shafties for an 8% gearing advantage overall. Another 8% can be had by putting a Seca rim on a Maxim.

But to answer the first question - no, not possible, no way, may as well try to fit Suzuki parts

Time, I bought the thing from the guy on the Concours forum. It's actually a bevel gear from a different bike put in a ZG-1000 final drive case. It cuts RPMs in all gears by 12% (I think). He calls it a 7th gear mod because it reduces highway RPMs as if you had an extra gear.

    Pretty neat.

Btw, that guy is kinda like Fitz and Rick on this forum. A resident expert.

The 550/600s all had 6-speed gearboxes as did the 400 from whence they sprang. With chain final drive.

Those bikes also have chain-driven primaries; the way the engine drives the clutch/trans is different than on the shaft-driven bikes.

You can't just drop a 550 gearbox into one of the shafties, the design differences are too great.
