I have recently acquired a 1982 xj750 maxim. I want to do some updates to make it less dated. I'm replacing the tank with one off of an xj900. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good aftermarket instrument cluster that wouldn't be so big and bulky. Also does anyone know if a modern alarm would fit this bike or if i would have to adapt it some how? and finally a drum to disk mod. I've done mechanics, lighting, and sound on cars. But know very little of motorcycles

I think there's a fitting issue with Seca tanks on a Maxim. If I remember correctly the issue is with the back (seat end) of the tank not meshing with the frame properly but not sure. I believe switching out the "atari" gauages are complicated and I wouldn't know where to begin. Someone will chime in to help, hope the tank fits and good luck.
BTW Check the rear brakes for delamination: very dangerous condition.

Thanks for the reply. If it doesn't fit I'll just resell it. Hopefully someone has an opinion on the alarm and instrument cluster.

Can anyone help with a drum to disk mod?

    bump

I've been looking like crazy but cannot for the life of me find the post I saw where someone put a seca tank on their bike. I got my Maxim for $350 in running condition by only expenses so far are those that would've gone into any used bike I would've purchased. These bikes seems to be scarce in the NYC area so I'm making mine into a custom Cafe/street fighter/Rat rod stylistically speaking. So I have my round headlight and a triple tree that takes bars.

My question is if I'm making a custom/modding the current seat would I be able to make the lines work with a Seca tank?

Also Low profile bars that won't hinder my turning but still give it that stream like look

    Ahhh pumba.
I looked to your build for inspiration but felt a little discouraged seeing all the custom fab work and simply decided to admire from the back of the classroom.
How was the wiring? I'm good with electrics and such.
Also what kind of bars are those and do they clear? risers?

I remover the drag bars because of the switches hitting the tank.

I wired the koso instruments at the same time as neatening up the harness and replacing 90% of the connectors with sealed weatherpak ones, and had no issues, but then again, I don't have issues with doing any wiring.

On my ongoing list of things to do is making a new harness from scratch using silicone wire and deutsch connectors, but I would not even be able to sell the old harness because of the custom switches and Koso dash.

I'm currently trying to win a set of handlebars on ebay so I can try each and decide which to keep. It seems like a little too much work to work out all the kinks with the koso. Although it does look beautiful

look for acewell gauges - thats where i would go. koso might be more of quality though idk. and kinks will be there for any aftermarket gauge installation.

since youre customizing your seat you can fit it on anything you can imagine :D
