FYI: Most of our bikes get GROUND to the switches (ie turn signals and maybe the headlight) THRU the handle bars.

If you put on painted bars, you are probably not getting ground as needed for all the switches.

You are either going to have to learn how to be your own mechanic, pay a fortune a "questionable" mechanic and HOPE it work after you pay him or just sell it after you give up or go broke paying a mechanic that is clueless about our "quirky" XJ and their carbs.

That being said: Time, reading, patience, some tools and new parts and you can do all the work yourself if you spend enough time here.

On a side note... Unless you were experienced at reviving a 30 year old bike, you really should have gotten it running right before trying to modify anything... So stop modifying it and get the carbs, valves and adjustments done right. Then you'll have a smooth running engine for your cafe project...

Rant off... It's been a long day and i'm tired and pissed I have to wait another day for my motorcycle battery because UPS didn't leave it at the door...

I am in Apex, right next door. You will not find a shop that will work on these old bikes without a premium price. I will work on it. Send me a PM and tell me what you need.

THIS is the best advice. Yes, you've caused some problems with your rush to modify; but you're also discovering that these bikes do need some TLC to run right. They're quite a bit more complex than a single-cylinder with a slide valve carb.

I'm not ignoring your PM, by the way; I haven't had a chance to answer because it's going to take a LOT of typing.

You need a service manual; even if you're not going to be doing all the work yourself.

And stop trying to 'mod' anything until the bike's running right.

If you want the bike to run right.... YOU are the best mechanic for the job. Most of that have learned that lesson quite expensively....

MLEW, Metal_Bob, and especially BigFitz know their stuff inside + out. They won't steer you wrong. If MLEW is offering to swing by + take a look... I'd take him up on it.

    I would also recommend searching for BigFitz's, RickCoMatic's, + Chacal's carb articles.

I would definitely take MLew up on taking a look at your bike. He has always seemed helpful towards me in offering help doing things. I would also heed the advice of the others as well. They know their stuff and don't mind helping either.
