Any ideas on how to jump a 700 with a completely shot battery? I cant run fast enough.. Iv just tried to jump the starter by connecting negative at the starter and positive to the now connected + & - at the battery.. Wishful thinking iv know~ there was a short at the transformer coming off the battery ehen iv got gas a few hours ago, iv took care of it, but a new battery isnt happening tonight.. I think the engine start switch didnt have power last try...

The ignition system on an XJ requires a decent voltage to work, and roll starting with a shot battery wont work.

As for jump stating, just remember that the jump leads are doing the job of the battery and should be treated accordingly. If you are not sure how to do it, get someone involved who knows. It is not complicated but can be stuffed up and it can damage things.

Trying to explain in writing will never be a substitute for someone looking at it and saying... 'hang on, why is that wire connected there?'

No, we jumped it with a poertable at a body shop.. Just took the leads off and hit them directly. It runs for a bit until iv drop the rpms. I think one of the safety switches dropped voltage and killed.. Before i take a bus home trying whats available.. Seems like iv should be able to go with no lights etc. if its running

DO NOT RUN THE BIKE WITH THE BATTERY DISCONNECTED.

You can and will cook the regulator/rectifier.

I wouldn't recommend trying to run it with a dead battery either, since it likely won't. The charging system isn't on strength until 2000rpm; below that the bike NEEDS the battery to run.

Push starting it with a dead battery won't work, for the same reason.

    just a FYI- I didn't fry anything.

If you ever get stuck on the NJ turnpike there is a 24 hour Sunoco body shop in Cherry Hill (bet 4 & 3). These guys are awesome- one of them (Desi) gave me a ride to and from AutoZone to go get a new battery on a sunday. Alex, the night before, sat there with me for a few hours trying everything we could think of to charge or bypass the battery.
