If the Diaphragm Pistons are not rising as they should because their bores are "Tight" do to the Aluminum Oxidation ... they don't move the Needle UP sufficiently to allow the Maximum Supply from the Main Jet.

Fouled / Clogged / Wrong ~> Main Jet.
Incorrect Placement Upper Body Air Jets below Diaphragm ~> (Reversed)
Throttle Cable Connection Mount attached to wrong Carb. ~> (Bad angle)

Incorrect Placement Upper Body Air Jets below Diaphragm ~> (Reversed)
Haynes Manual Placement of these Jets Incorrect !!!

Definately check Ricks suggestions, the slides should move freely by poping them up with your finger. I know not easy when stock airbox and boots are in the way.
Just go threw steps of varifying things of probable cause. Put a timing light on each spark plug wire, rev it and see if you start loosing spark once the rev's get up there. I know old spark plug boots or wires have been causing some guys problems.

Also get some clear tubing, connect to the drain of the float bowl and hold up the other end looped next to the bowl while on centerstand, open the drain screw and check to make sure your float level (gas line) you see in the tubing is to within .70 of an inch from the mount surface of the bowl to the carb body. Manual says .3 - .7 but I find as long as your around 1 tenth inch to 1/8th from top surface it's usually ok to not be sucking the bowls dry or below the main jet on accelerating while under load.

    Good Luck
