On my 82 XJ 750 Maxim, I had already checked and took out all the slack at the Clutch Throwout Arm and adjusted the clutch cable from the bottom to the top of the clutch lever on the handebars, leaving only 3mm in free play there.

The problem is: When at idle at about 1100 RPM, with the clutch handle fully pulled in against the handlebar hand grip, it clunks going into 1st gear.

However, I would think the clutch has to be fully disengaging, because, then when in 1st gear and I start to leave out the clutch to make the bike go forward, I have to leave out the clutch hande about 1/4 of the way for the clutch to engage to move the bike forward. Go figue?

Would the next thing be some kind of an adjustment at the foot shifter, or something else, because I have never adjusted that since the bike was new, and ever today only has 27K miles on it.

Thanks guys for any and all replies.

Having driven tractor trailer, knowing some oil specialist and read all the positive properties in Shell Rotella 15w40, I have used this for many years with no problem at all. In the past I had used the 20W50 M.C. oil and then did have a little problem getting gears because it was probably a little thicker and leaving a heaver film on the clutch plates, until it really got warmed up a lot.

Now, the yamaha 20w40 oil they recommend is not always the easiest to get.
And unless the yamaha 20w40 oil is made exclusively by the same oil processer all the time, is it everalways the same?

I know other oils will make a wet clutch SLIP, But I definately do not have any trouble with clutch slipping. And with the Shell Rotella 15w40 taking the heat with a large diesel engine and giving excellent results I think is also a plus.

However, the only concern might be, does it have enough qualities for the bearings in the tranny? IS THAT THE ANSWER??

    Thanks!

So the answer to my question is "Shell Rotella 15W40?"

Clunk when cold but should basically go away once the bike is warm. I would try a different MC specific oil and see if that helps. Mobil/Castrol both make quality slippery stuff.
