    Hey guys,
I have a question about my '82 XJ750 Maxim. Between 4600 and 4900 RPMs I hear a rattle that sounds like it's coming from behind me on my right. I tried tapping on the heat shield and around the collector to see if anything was loose but didn't really find anything. Any suggestions on how to track down the noise? Thanks.

Upon further investigation I found it was the heat shield on the right side. Doesn't seem to be loose or anything. Could a leak under the heat shield cause it to vibrate and rattle like that? How easy is it to remove/replace that heat shield?

At the rpm's you listed the plant is putting out it's max vibrations, so it's somewhat normal for things to start vibrating at that point. That said you likely have something loose there. Check all over the related parts (headers, collector, etc.) for loose bolts. There might also be an exhaust leak you can't see, but should be able to find with some incense smoke or feel with your hand.
