    Which bike?? Miles??

The starter drives a clutch, which would have a bearing, then on to a chain.
These parts are turning continuously, in every gear, and if you suspect something is going to break, you need to "park it".

However, it's a characteristic of the "shafties" to have a whine, noticable under load, goes away when the throttle is closed, not noticable much over 4,500.

This is the crank-to-clutch basket Primary gearset with straight-cut teeth making the music, and slicing oil molecules to shreds!!

Sorry for being short on details,

83 xj750 13k (original owner) You are correct it only happens at low speeds and rpm's. but it's very noticeable. I'm not certain were it's coming from, the starter was just a guess and there is NO sound like something is tearing or breaking. I have the original fearing it came with and the sound seems to coming from the front end.

Speedometer drive is a good starting point. The speedo cable. Those are common front end noises. Bearing noises are usually noticable at all speeds.

Find a hill you can safely coast down without traffic (bike in Neutral, engine off) Unscrew the cable at the axle - secure the cable with tape!! Coast with and without the cable hooked-up.
That will troubleshoot and eliminate that.

Like was said before, these Maxims have their own unique sound which is a bit of a whine...
    Sorry
