You may or may not have read my other post about 650/750 swaps. I went to look/buy the bike today.

Turns out it wasn't a 750 after all. It does have a 750 tank though so that will hopefully work out. The vin is "4H7" so 650 maxim it is. From what I seen only the tach/speedo unit, the regulator/rectifier, and airbox +1 boot are missing. Well that and the front fender was swapped for an xs fender. The speedo was put on the same XS and was also there. It only had 14,xxx on the clock and he said he only put maybe a few hundred miles on it since the switch.

The valve cover gasket looked good. Head gasket was good. Fork seals are appeared to be in good condition. Oh, both side covers! Brakes were free...

All in all, I was bummed it wasn't a 750. The motor looked good so we settled on $150. In my book, it was a score!

Ideally, i'd like to make it a rider again. I'm not sure if I wanna keep it for parts or look for a titled frame? Any know of any or maybe a substitute frame. Maybe even hardtail it. Who knows....

Howdy Prince! in the future, you can find out the displacement of the engine by looking at the cylinder block in front just below the cam chain tunnel. There you should see the engine size numbers cast into the metal.

yeah, i did see that too. I was explaining to the guy it was a 650 like mine based on the 4H7, the single front brake, and of course the fact that there was no '80 or '81 750 maxim. He kept insisting thats what the title said. He didn't believe me until I showed him the "653cc".

When I read your post title, I was thinking: "Nooooo, don't trash a brand-new XJ for parts!" Then I thought "How did he FIND one of these fine specimens, brand-new?"

    :)

    Nice find for $150...

BTW, I learned that my engine indeed is a 750cc, whew! My engine was from another XJ and after I read where to look for the stamp on the block (via this post), I was nervous...

Enjoy the parts bike. I found a trashed '82 750 Maxim for $300 no way will I buy it...
