Hello My XJer's. Would anyone have any advice on a general home tool to help hold a clutch in order to remove the basket on an 81 650? I have a broken bolt and now a broken finger on my basket and need to replace it but am unable to hold clutch to get basket off. Help is appreciated.

One proper "tool" is a pair of clutch pliers:

The "factory" tool looks kind of like this: http://www.laceyducati.com/ducati-parts ... 0large.jpg (although this one's for a Ducati) which is a disc with both "pressure plate" and "plain plate" tabs on it and a handle.

If you have any old, used up clutch guts, one can be fabricated by "pinning" an old plain plate to a friction plate and fabbing a handle.

Or you could use an automotive "strap wrench" if you have a style that will fit into the basket.

A pair of chain pliers would work well I would think. The ridges of the chain should grab the ridges in the basket, it would certainly ruin it if its not already though.

I remember just putting my 750 in gear and stepping on the rear brake while loosening the nut. Think it was a high gear.

Is there something wrong with this method? Does it only work on shafties?

It loads the drivetrain, which on a chain driven bike such as the one I was working on, doesn't work so well.

It might work fine on a "shaftie" though; I didn't think of that...

I know this is an old thread, but figured out this little trick and didn't want to make a thread on it.

How to remove the basket with no tool and just stuff laying around the shop. Yes it is a shaft driven. Not sure about the chain driven.

    Sure.

    Have you read this? http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html

Take the little lever off the top of the throwout shaft if you haven't already. It's gotta get repositioned anyway.

Then position the "pull rod" as shown in my article (second -to-last pic;) teeth to the rear so it can fit into its d-shaped hole in the cover and the teeth can engage the gear on the throwout shaft.

If the lever and spring are still on, they can interfere with the rotation of the throwout shaft as the cover goes on.
