Im New and I don't know what to do!!!

    Hey Forum I am New, New to the Forum, New to Motorcycles in General! haha, I just bought 82 Seca 650 for 500 bucks its pretty clean so Im hoping I don't have to do a lot to it , the Guy I bought it from said it needed new ignition coils, and spark plugs, But I am thinking the Carbs are just gunked up.....I have know clue on what to check first and where to go from there, it appears to have a K and N pod filter kit, and it only has 18,000 Km's So im hoping its Bulletproof, I plan on working on it this weekend, But I have no clue on what oil to buy, and I haven't been able to find a Haynes Repair Bible for it! So Forum! Help out the Newb!

    Welcome from Dubuque Iowa, there is a lot of good advice in these forums and great guys to help you on your way, I recomend checking the rear brakes for delamination before you ride. aside from that the best advice I can give is read every possible thread you can pertaining to your bike, including carbs breaks, electrical, etc...

    First, I would check to see if you are getting spark since the previous owner said it needs plugs and coils. New plugs are a good idea. Make sure the battery is fully charged. I would also just plan on cleaning the carbs. Check to make sure your valve clearances are in spec. Do not use automotive oil in your bike. Make sure it is a motorcycle specific engine oil. Since you don't have your location listed I can't really make a suggestion on brand since I have no idea what is available in your area. You will also need to VISUALLY inspect the rear brakes for delamination. Check the date codes on your tires. Old tires are not safe even if the tread looks good. Read all the how to articles on these different procedures on this forum.

    The basic advise, in order, goes like this -

    * Process the title in your name
    * Get a Service, Shop manual
    * Rear Brake Delam / Tire Date Code check (see my sig)
    * Valve lash check / adjusted
    * Compression check to verify you have a "motor"
    * New gas / oil
    * Carb work or adjustment, running sync
    * Brake bleed, and any needed work
    * Go thru manual and do ALL scheduled maintenance, like it's never been done

    At this point, your bike should be reasonably safe to BEGIN riding, and be on the lookout for other things that may need attention.

    alot of folks snag their repair manuals from ebay . also with some searching you can generally find em in pdf( adobe reader ) form on the web from other owners who have scanned theirs, as a backup :) also not a bad idea to pickup an owners manual , the older ones are generally pretty helpful, can find on ebay or in pdf aswell ... i found both for my 86 maxim 700 ( pdf form )in links elsewhere in these forums and just keep em loaded on my phone

    Ummm. yes, you will. Clean doesn't translate to well maintained, not at that price.

    You're going to sink just a tad more than you paid for it into it, or fight with it forever. Carbs, valve adjustment, BRAKE rebuild, tires, shocks; you'll be replacing more than a few parts, honest.

    Plus doing a whole bunch of work. But it's worth it, if you're up to it.

    The 650 Seca factory book is a combination of a "Seca" supplement and the base XJ650G book. Be careful on eBay so you don't end up with only the supplement. You're looking for LIT-11616-XJ-65; which is a combination of LIT-11616-02-86 the Seca part, and LIT-11616-01-94, the base 650G book.

    You can also get along quite well with the Haynes 650/750 book, it has a picture of a red Seca 750 (rectangular headlights) on the cover.

    Just don't think this will be quick, easy or cheap. Or you'll just get frustrated, because IT WON'T BE. The manual is a good place to start.

Bay....Huber, you can get the Haynes from Crappy Tire for $25..."XJ650 and 750 Fours 653cc - 748cc. 1980 to 1984" Figure on $500 - $750 to renew/replace needed stuff [like s.s.brake lines, disc pads, etc] and use this forum to search. Be prepared for some serious manhours in the cave/garage...but what else is there in Regina anyway?
