Firstly can I say a huge thanks to Kevineleven who found me a nice set of Maxim 650 gauges and posted them to the UK for my trike!

The problem I'm having is that it's a 700 based trike with a butchered loom and a 650 front end. I've got most things working, but I can't find a 700 wiring diagram and the XJ CD doesn't seem to have one (according to the info pages). The problem I'm having concerns the indicators and the tacho.

The 650 gages have one indicator light, but the old gauges used two seperate direction indicators... how can I wire both indicators to feed the same light without one side making the other side work? At the moment I've wired the left hand side through the orange warning light, and the right hand side through the oil warning light. This is fine, except when the left indicators are on, the tacho waves around all over the place, whereas with the rights on, the tacho remains steady... I've tried wiring both warning lights through the same earth but this doesn't change things... any ideas, or does anyone have a 700 wiring diagram?

    Thanks in advance

    Sam

You can run both indicator circuits to the indicator light by putting a diode in each lead. Doides only let electricity flow one direction so that will prevent the left from flashing the right anc vice versa.

Cheers MiCarl... knew someone would have an answer! I've never used diodes before... how are they rated and what rating do I need?

    Thanks

The XJCD does have a wiring diagram, look at:
    chapter 6 page 1 of the XJ700 Maxim Service Manual - N
    or
    chapter 7 page 1 of the XJ700X / 750X Maxim X Service Manual

Diodes have lots of ratings, and I'm not familiar with all of them.

Get yourself a pair of rectifier diodes rated for 20 volts or more and 1 amp.

Here in the US we have a company called RadioShack that sells a two pack of 1N4004 diodes for $0.79. They are rated at 1 amp, 30 amp surge and 400 volts. This is a very common component, your local electronic parts place probably has a bin full of them.

Thanks for that... I've managed to find the diodes on ebay for £1.55 (about $3.20) including poatage for 100 diodes! I'll have a few spares so if anyone needs any diodes, I can send them for the cost of an airmail stamp!
