    Hi All,

I'm new to this forum so I thought I would introduce myself.

I live in Shakey Town (Christchurch, New Zealand) and I acquired a running 1982 XJ650 Special (16F) about 4 months ago which is in need of TLC.

I love this bike and am going to attempt to rebuild it from the frame up, I am quite mechanically minded but new to motorbike mechanics so I hope you guys can be patient as I ask lots of questions :)

    Welcome aboard.

Don't make the mistake of tearing too far into the motor only to discover the bits you need to put it back together aren't available or ungawdly expensive.

Get a manual and do your research; diagnose the motor (compression test, valve clearances, etc.) don't assume that because it runs it's a viable lump. These things will run halfway decent with three good cylinders and one really sour one.

Done a compression test and all 4 are good, going to check the valve clearances when I can get a new gasket as theirs already a bit of leakage.

The only part I'm nervous about so far is stripping the bike to pieces and then getting another big earthquake here while its in bits :p

Spares availability here is an absolute nightmare, Need to order most bits in frm overseas with high shipping rates :( got lucky and got my hands on 2 spare carb racks and various other bits of a similar model the other day though :)
