Thanks again to everyone for answering my questions regarding gasket removal and installation. I received my side cover gaskets. The gasket seems to have two different surfaces. One side has white lines on it and the other side is just flat black. Which side goes to the engine side and which side gets tacked onto the cover?

If the gasket is symetrical it won't matter, but usually they only go on one way and that's the way the shape of the engine is. It corresponds.

I understand you align the gasket to the covers outer surface. The gasket itself has two different surfaces. I am just trying to find out which surface goes against the cover and the engine.

I'm not trying to be a smartarse and i appreciate your dilema, but it will only go one way.
If you fit it the wrong way there will be parts of the gasket sticking out from the sides of the casings.
If the gasket is symetrical it still won't matter which side is which, whether it's the white stripey side or the plain side.
The white stripes could be a type of gasket cement activated by the heat of the engine, some new type genuine Yamaha cylinder base gaskets are like that, and have gasket cement on the surface, even so, those type of gaskets still only go the one way on.
