Difficult, best to try a known working one, see if the TCI is the problem.

Try and get a copy of the xjcd somewhere on it is a section on repairing and checking the TCI box, sometimes failure can be caused by cracked or dry solder joints.

I wouldnt recommend opening it up without some technical advice and only if you can comfortably use a soldering iron.

If not try as wizard suggests and try a known working one.

Doubtful it's the TCI; do a forum search on "safety circuit" more likely a sidestand switch problem. Or it could be any of the various components of the safety system, "shutting down" the TCI.

GET A MANUAL, and a meter, and diagnose the problem. Guessing gets expensive right quick, and the system has a lot more to it than you might expect.

    Didn't I just answer this in another thread? http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=3 ... tml#318140

Presenting the same problem in multiple, repetitive threads is a waste of everyone's time. Ask your question, and then take the advice given, report back with your results. Don't go "shopping" for the answer you like best. The correct answer is NOT likely to be quick nor easy, it's a 30-year old bike.

You most likely have a safety circuit problem. Start with the sidestand switch, then the fusebox; and onward from there. Don't blow up your TCI screwing around.
