starter spins

    my 1982 xj750j some times when cranking it seems like the starter kicks out and just spins, engine quits cranking ,any ideas or what the problem is.
    battery is good , checked all connections . no difference with 100 amp battery charger jump start

    Do you have non synthetic motorcycle oil? Synthetic oil and automobile oil will cause starter to slip.

    You could have a cracked starter clutch. There's 3 rollers that press and wedge against a smooth shaft.
