Just curious about the gas tank on my Maxim. The PO painted it and it doesn't match the side covers. There's no Yamaha badges on it. When I had it off the bike, I noticed what looks like a fuel gauge sending unit. Is that what I am seeing here? This bike doesn't have a fuel gauge.
What do you guys think? Is this a 1981 Maxim tank or is from a different bike?

750 gas tanks bolt right onto a 650 frame i do believe. Theyre hold more fuel.

Figuring out how much it holds is a good start.

Im pretty sure thats the sending unit, or whats left of it.

Is it a 1981?...No way to tell.

    Is it a Maxim tank?...Yes.

Is it a 650 tank?...Only way to tell is by the capacity. The 650 Maxim tank only holds 3.4 US gallons.

It could be from a 750, which has a 4.5 US gallon capacity.

EXAMINE the underside very carefully; you may find a part number or a partial part number.

Thanks. Next time I have it off, I will look carefully. It just seemed odd to have a sending unit on a bike without a gauge.

Did any of the 650 max's come with the sender? Mine didnt. I know the 750s did. Someone may have already gotten you the bigger tank.

Weird. I've had two 750 tanks including the one I have now and they both had a sender and the tank that came on my bike did not have a sender.

The only tanks that came equipped with sending units are the 550 seca (will not fit the 650). The 750 seca (obviously not one from the pic). or the 82 750 maxim.

As you can see from the following pic of the 82 750 maxim tank that I have.

The sending unit on the petcock side shows it to most likely be the same tank.

Then I've had two 82 tanks. Because that's exactly what they look like.

So does that 750 tank really bolt right on, no modification necessary? Does it look normal? (Anyone have pics of a bike with one?)

Where could I grab one of those, and how much would I be looking in the range of?

Good luck - I've been trying to score a 750 Maxim tank for mine for years, and can never afford them when they come up.
Hope you have better luck than me!

Now it's been a while since I noticed the sender on my 85 XJ700N tank but I do know it has a sender on it for the low tank level idiot light.
That tank in the picture looked like my 700 tank..... sorry but I don't remember how the idiot light sender looked on mine though.
