So yesterday I changed the oil and filter, checked the cam shim clearances, replaced the intake to manifold boots, and also swapped the Airbox out for pods. I started it up and now it's making a squeeking noise. It sounds like it's coming from the top end around the center or right side. It's a slow noise that'll get faster with the RPM's.

Today I removed to valve cover to make sure it wasn't rubbing on anything and turned the cams and they turn like they're supposed to with no noise.

I believe the previous owner had it overfilled with automotive oil.
    Could this be the problem?

I'm stuck and not sure what other steps if any there are to take. Help.

Air leaks will make a squeaking noise. Maybe one of the boot gaskets is not in place. You could also be hearing the intake suction through the pod filters.
Too much oil won't make noise, just makes the engine run poor.

AWESOME!! I'll check on that tomorrow and get back to you. I put new gaskets on them but they could be leaking I guess.

I couldn't wait until tomorrow. I found some carb cleaner and sprayed it down there and the revs shot up so that's what it is. THANK YOU!! I was afraid I'd done something to ruin my bike.

Try some gasket adhesive spray on them and stick the gaskets to the boots before putting them in place.

Just realize that with these bikes, using PODs is almost certainly going to require you to a) resync the carbs and b) get different jets for the carbs and even then it will probably never run as well as it did with the stock air box.

Mike's right those pods are a pain in the neck in the long run.

There is a groove that a small protrusion needs to go into on the boots, sounds like one of them isnt in the groove quite right.

I use a piece of 1/2 in garden hose like a stethescope to pinpoint noises.
    Not sure that will help....

    Good Luck!

Other than the noise the bike runs like a top with the pods on there. And right now I live in Phoenix so I don't really have to worry about changing weather messing with things.

Besides, when I had the carbs off I noticed that the slides were a little dirty and could use a good cleaning anyways.

First things first though. I need a new front tire and time to save up for the rebuild kit.

Most XJs that "hole" a piston were real screamers right up until they quit.

You need to keep a close eye on the plugs for speckles of aluminum or other signs of overly-lean running.

It'll run GREAT when running lean; but not for long...
