    Hello fellow riders,

    I have a 1982 750 Yamaha Maxim.

I noticed on the lock that unlocks the helmet lock that it will lock the helmet lock function but not the seat itself.

I noticed that the seat lever on both sides, including the side that also has the helmet lock will not lock atleast the lever where you put the key.

I'm concerned as it seems that anybody could take my seat off at anytime.

Is this normal for this bike? Is this just something I will have to accept and hope nobody takes my seat away?

    Thanks

In the helmet lock there is a pin that at one time kept the seat locked (so that the lever could not move). Over time that pin has worn down so now yes anyone can take your seat off.

    Thanks for the information.

Do you know, is it hard to find and replace this pin on the locking mechanism?

More than likely, the metal stop has actually broken off and not worn down. This can easily happen if you or a PO tried to force the seat latch when it was locked.

I took mine apart to clean it out and thats what I found to be the case. If you want to disassemble yours its really simple, but i would recommend doing it with your hands and the latch in a clear plastic bag as the springs can spring off to an un-findable place if they pop out.

Here is a picture of the lock with the metal stop just sitting off where it is supposed to be - see it is slightly to the right?

See the location of where it should be? The piece itself is on the left on the black part:

I just took the piece out so that it wouldn't get all jammed up.

I emailed Len to see if I could just get the Silver washer/disc with the stud on it but he only carries replacement latches as a whole.

If you were to buy a replacement latch though, you could install your original lock core into the latch as it is only held in with a c-clip. But keep the key in the lock when you remove it to keep all the lock 'wafers' intact.

    See reply:

    "Hey Chris,

We don't have any new latch/lock units available, only good used ones:

HCP529-VGU OEM seat and helmet lock unit, very good used condition, includes a matching key. Fits all XJ750 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models.
    $ 59.95

    Thanks,

    Len"

To me, to have a lockable seat isn't worth 60.00. Perhaps someday If i were to get it custom fitted and covered, I would consider the investment - but not right now.

Perhaps you could try epoxying the piece back in place? or drill the washer through completely and some how put a metal "pin" through the hole? As it wouldn't be able to slide out once the cover is installed.

    Just an idea.

    Good Luck!

P.s. sorry for the crappy pictures, my phone sucks when its anything short of full sun! :(
