OK, I know this should be simple, but...

I need to remove the tank on my XJ-650. As I understand, all I need to do is remove the bolt at the rear of the tank, and lift it off. Problem is, it won't lift off.

It's probably just stuck, but I'm not inclined to start trying to force the thing. Should it just pop off?

there are two rubber bungs at the front of the tank.
remove it by lifting the tail (near the seat) and pulling up and slightly to the rear.

Make sure you disconnect the fuel and vacuum lines too.

Then yes, it should just pull/wiggle off.

Often the rubber mounts at the front can be really stuck/'rusted' to the metal of the tank. The only way to get it off, is the keep pulling and wiggling. If you can see in far enough from the front/underneath of the tank, maybe get some Kroil or PBBlaster up in there to help loosen things.

MAKE SURE that you put a couple rags or something at the front of the tank-to-frame tunnel so that you don't dent the tank with the handlebars or bend the edge of the tunnel against the frame. Also, DON'T wrap your fingers around there when trying to lift/wiggle the tank. If you do, you'll find out quick enough when you let go from the sheer pain of wedging you fingers between the tank and the headtube.
