Fusebox; sidestand switch, sidestand relay, neutral switch, safety relay.

If it's not a broken "IGN" fuse clip, start with the sidestand switch.

That's the most common suspect because of it's location down there in the path of road debris and spray. When it begins to fail it gets intermittent at first and will try to drive you crazy.

Get a service manual or this will go on for a really long time.

Look inside the headlight shell. Look for loose wires, corroded or loose connectors, etc.

Take the tank off and check all the connections to the headlight relay.

Honestly; you're going to have to get serious if you want to really ever use this bike. And the first step toward that is to get ahold of a service manual.

Meanwhile, read this CAREFULLY it might help you get in the right frame of mind: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=24010.html

Or, fight with it forever. Your choice.

Yes. It should only come on once the bike is running, but will stay on if the motor stalls, until you switch off the key.

    It uses a "latching" relay.

Adjust the valves, sync the carbs, flush and bleed the brakes, check, lube and adjust the rear chain, check the air in the tires and pray the guy who said he fixed everything else wasn't lying.

The "X" motor XJs have a 20-valve watercooled motor that requires you pull the camshafts out to adjust the valves. I wouldn't recommend one to a new mechanic, it would just end in tears.

Let's see you get the 550 running properly first. As in, pulls cleanly from 2500rpm to redline, runs to 10K easily in the first four gears, immediately returns to a smooth idle at 1200rpm, and gets 52~56MPG.

After the valves are in spec the carbs will need to be re-sync'ed. When you replace shims it changes the manifold vacuum so it throws off the sync. This all has to be done every 5000 miles so you'll need to learn it.

Anything else that was overlooked will present itself as soon as you start riding the bike, trust me. I'll give it 200~300 miles before the tach drive seals start leaking: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19538.html

If the brakes weren't as "rebuilt" as you think, they'll start acting up.

You're going to need that manual. It's a 30-year old bike. Ask some guys who own a few...

You're going to need to expect to spend a bit of money. And that goes for ANY bike more than about 6 years old, no matter what it is.

The "investment" required to recommission an old bike is a mere fraction of the cost of a new bike; but you're still going to need to buy some parts and tools.

A tool to sync the carbs can be made with a long piece of vinyl tubing, a yardstick and some ATF; or a couple of baby bottles and some tubing. You don't NEED expensive sync tools, it just makes it easier.

What you DO NEED to do is to get your valves in spec before you hurt the motor.
