Don't need any help here, just venting some frustrations and passing on some advise.

I checked my valves the other day and figured out what shims I needed and which I could reuse. Put my order in to Chacal and yesterday they showed up and I was all excited to get everything in spec. What I didn't know is that somehow I mismeasured one valve so I wasn't able to reuse that shim where I needed. The only thing I can think of is that I had to stack my feeler gages together to measure clearances and I must have one gage stick to another and not notice making my clearances look tighter than they actually were. Sigh, now I have to wait a little longer to ride and today is looking to be the first nice day in awhile...

So there it is folks, when checking clearances make absolute certain you don't have extra gages stuck in your stack.

Many motorcycle shops will swap out shims at no or low cost.

Its worth a shot? Math is not my strong point either....

You mean I can go to a motorcycle shop and the'll change my shims for free ? Where ? I'm pretty sure thier not going to take the cover off change the shims and put everything back together for free.

I think he means they will trade your shims for theirs, i.e, you go in with a 270 or whatever and they'll trade you for a 275 with no money trading hands.

    Kdubs got it.

If you bring the shims to them. Alot of times they will swap out for the proper size shims for no cost.

Wait what? Sorry, I'm bringing back an old thread but... I thought you couldn't reuse the old shims? What's stopping someone from coming in with old shims and getting them swapped for new ones? Or does it not matter?

    It only matters if:

    1. you WANT new shims
    2. the old shims are worn out or damaged.

This is why I, and some others, run some shim pools.

Now, if you tell me what size shim you got, and if it is a NOS shim, or a new Aftermarket shim, I'll check what I have in my NOS and NEW aftermarket shims. If I have the size you need, I'll swap it for you.

    Let me know.....via pm.

Yeah - last time I did my valves I wrote down what the old shim was incorrectly so one of the shims I had ready to put in there was incorrect.

Went to the local yammie dealer and they swapped me one for free.

My yammie dealer here won't swap ANYTHING, funny with all the other stuff I do for them, the business I send them, and the support they give me for the carb clinics. Yet....they won't swap a shim if needed, and they charge me full price. Hmmmm.......must be for an older bike...... LOL
