sooty plugs

    hi all . i no this is an xj forum but me dad in law has a xv700 and it soots the front plug after about 20 mile . does anyone have any idea what would be causing this and wat to check thanks

    So it soots the plug after about 20 miles eh? :lol:
    Sounds like it's running a bit rich. You know, a bit too much fuel.
    Try adjusting the mixture screw on that carb to the specified setting found in the manual.
    If the rear pot is normal, you could check how many turns out the mixture screw on that one is and then set the front to the same setting.
    Count how many turns it takes to screw the needle in until it seats lightly, don't over tighten or you'll be up shit street, then back it off to where it was, and then set the front 'til it's the same.
