Can someone lead me to where the air/fuel screw is on these carbs? A pic would really help.

On the very top. One on each carb; although they MAY still be covered by the factory-installed blanking plugs.

HOWEVER: If you have to ask where they are, don't mess with them.

Adjusting the mixture screws is LAST in a sequence which includes, IN ORDER:

    -Valve clearances in spec.

    -Carbs religiously clean.
-Float levels individually precisely set using fuel and the "clear tube" method.
-Bench sync, the more accurate the better.
-Running vacuum sync with YICS blocked.
-THEN AND ONLY THEN do you mess with the mixture screws, which you set at 2.5 turns out when you cleaned and serviced the carbs.

Start messing around with mixtures NOW and all you're going to do is make the bike not run right or worse, honest.

Check the valves before you hurt the motor; adjust as needed (they will) then get after the carbs.

If you want it to run right, follow this advice. In order and don't skip any. Or fight with it until you do.

Then once it's running we gotta talk brakes. You probably should read this before you get hurt: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

    Fitz,

I had the carbs cleaned about 8 months ago and after sitting this winter I had to drain all 4 bowls while on the bike, change the gas in the tank and put a new gas filter on it just to get it to start about 3 weeks ago. I am going to follow your advice this time. How long should it take to do the valve clearances? I already bought the special tool for it. Thanks so much for the advice, I am going to check/change the brake pads tomorrow.
