    Hi all !
Crazy thing, bought an '82 Maxim, previous owner had it registered, I went to change the ownership today and they said there is a problem with the VIN number because it is only 10 digits and should be 17 8O . Can anyone confirm this. Both numbers on my bike match the 10 digits on the original registration. When I asked how it was possible that someone else registered with 10 digits she said they had made a mistake (scratching my head) ..
    Thanks in advance,

Do you have a white tag - or is it missing??

You can "generate" a 17 digit VIN # using Chacal's guide, in "information overload" , but printing a white tag can be tricky.

Do you really need the white tag in Canada??

Will they accept your "new" VIN# and how would they check??

    Entirely possible.
Bikes made before 1981 or 1982 had 10 digit VIN #s. Your bike was made before then and titled in 1982. I had the same issue with my XS1100. I had to bring a photo of the VIN to the DMV to prove it. No problem after that.

There were plenty of bikes before the law took effect that were titled with a 10 digit. Chacal's VIN page will get you your 17 digit VIN. If you can't get it figured, post the 10 digit and we'll help you out. All you are missing is the 3 letters, two numbers, and the check digit, which is the hardest part of figuring the VIN.
