    Hi from Minnesota.

I'm new to the group, and look forward to learning from all of you. I graduated from high school in 1981 in Quebec, Canada, the same year the Seca 550 debuted. But it was the red 82 that stole my heart. But, I couldn't afford one, and bought a used XS 650 Heritage Special instead. But some reason, I decided this year to finally snag my old dream, and this past weekend, bought a 82 in nice condition that has been repainted. He wanted $1200, but I got him down to $1000 because the starter wouldn't start it (we had to bump start it), and because the 4-into-one exhaust was baffleless and I was going to have to do something with it. The upholstery also needs some work. The bike has 20,000 miles. I do think a recent previous owner restored a lot of this bike, happily.

I've read a lot of the past posts, and will be changing the brake hose (it says 7/81 on it!!), ordering new brake shoes, inspecting the front pads, swapping out the old tube fusebox for a clip one, and installing an in-line fuel filter. I have ordered a print copy of the workshop manual; I haven't received it yet I'm mechanically inclined, but am no genius.

First things first - fixing the starting! The guy I bought it from told me the old starter didn't work, so he bought another one on Craigslist, but it was still having problems. He was auto mechanic, and he felt it was the clutch and not the starter. I have no idea how to tell if it's the starter, or the starter clutch. So, I uploaded a video of it: http://youtu.be/Yw9jkb3NtrM

And no, the motor is not turning over when I'm cranking on it.

Let me know what you think!

    Andre from Minnesota

Sounds like the bendix spring isn't kicking out.
