My bike was dying if I didn't have the choke on so I adjusted the idle, I think. ( a nob in the back of the motor.) Anyway, I turned that a bunch of times til it sounded good and stayed running without the choke on. After that it sounds nice and stays running, just sitting there. Problem is now I pull the clutch and kick it into first and now it kills every time. Any ideas?????

Could be your side stand switch. I've noticed a lot of guys have that issue. Especially if it just dies with a "thunk" kind of death. You should be able to short the switch and try it again.

I had the dying-without the-choke-on issue with my '81 750 and a good scrubbing of the carbs, it was fine.

Ok this might sound stupid but I may have had the kick stand down when I was putting it in first. Is that what the side stand swicth is for???

That's exactly what it's for. They don't want you to go driving off with the kickstand down, so it kills the motor when you shift out of neutral with the stand down.
