On my 82 Maxim 650 I recently cut the mufflers to a kind of slash look. There is still a resignator and baffle inside of them but I get 3 small pops when I start to slow down for a stop or a turn. It never did this before so i am unsure if its a carb problem or not. the plus seem to be fine in color and i am getting the same mpg.
Is it something I am just going to have to live with???

Is it ok to leave it the way it is as long as its just popping and not backfiring??

    HELP!!

A leak in your exhaust joints could cause that... and since you messed with your exhaust...

Modifying the exhaust also changes the air/fuel mixutre. You are flowing more air and therefore the mixture is lean, lean air/fuel makes the popping sond in the exhaust. Might think about going up a jet size or two. Keep a eye on the plug color and don't let it run too lean.

Might be just a tad lean.

If its a tad lean is ok to run it the rest of the summer? I plan on rejetting the carbs and doing the valve clearance/ synch this winter

Do a plug chop-ride under load (>5k rpms) and hit the kill switch then examine your plugs. If they are lilly white then you are too lean (which is likely), and no you don't wan't to run it through the Summer that way. You might be able to make it through colder weather that way but not hot as the lack of fuel will cause your engine to overheat.

Try adjusting your pilot screws as suggested, but get a baseline first by gently screwing them in until they are seated while counting the turns. That way you know where they were before you made adjustments. Factory puts them at 2 1/2 turns out which is slightly lean to meet emissions standards, so around 3 turns out is better. You might need more but after 5 turns out no more adjustment is possible-if you get there and still lean you need bigger jets or your floats are set too low.

You can use a colortune or follow Rick's method outlined here for getting the mixture set just right. A tiny amount of degree (5 or less) can make a big difference in the amount of flow.

Why in the world would you wait until winter to do those things..... ?
Check your valves first of all then do a sync and color tune.
If it still does it after that then you will need to try different jets.
A pop is a backfire, just not as loud as you may expect it.
Your bike is telling you that something isn't right so why not take care of it?

    Start here.

Back all 4 mixture screws out another 1/4 turn or so and see if it still pops.

If that appears to clear it up, ride it and keep an eye on the plugs.

I gotta agree with OBD, though-- CHECK THOSE VALVE CLEARANCES. Put it off and ride all summer and you could hurt a valve.

I agree I should definitely check those valve clearances. My only problem is that I dont fully understand what to do. I have read and reread the sticky on here and being the not-so-mechanical-savy guy that I am, I'm having trouble putting it all together..

Its quite easy, and you really should learn it. Im pretty sure were supposed to check clearances every 5k miles.

Just get a $4.00 32 blade feeler gauge, remove your valve cover bolts, carefully remove the cover, remove the crank cover, spin it while paying attention to spin it in the proper direction, youll see the buckets come up as the valves point outward. Thats your measuring point. Youll have access to 2 valves at each top stroke, measure both, and spin the crank until 2 more valves are TDC, measure them, and repeat for the others. Compare using metric measurements to you bikes recommended clearances.

Then if out of spec, you can worry about the tool, and pulling, reading, and replacing shims, which is still easy, but quite a bit more involved.

Hopefully youll be good, and you wont have to adjust anything, but its really something that can be done by you.

Thanks for all the help and reply guys, I am going to tackle the valve clearance issue as soon as my college semester is over (may 4). If i have any more problems I know where I can find help, once again I appreciate all the advice and I hope I can return the favor to all of you somehow, someway.
