Well I finally got done with a year long build. I used every available yamaha part to keep this bike as true as possible right down to the 1962 enduro tank. I still need to fab the exhaust and detail the bike but I rode it today and it is freakin fun. I just wanted to say thank you to all the members on here whos help was invaluable. Thanks

Agreed. I like the hump at the top of the tank. Did you have to make that a single tube backbone or is the tank just that wide at the bottom to fit over the original backbone? Also with the forks lowered has it affected the steering at all or have you noticed any slight wobbles occurring? I wanted to do the same for my bike to give it a smaller stance and make it more comfortable to ride with forward controls on it.

Yes the backbone was made into a single, I wasn't. Goin to but I liked te tank so much that I altered the frame for the tank. The front does not wobble, I lowered the front a couple inches and when I cut the downtube I raked the front out two inches as well. At slow speed sharp turns the front does tend to wanna flop but at. Spee no issues.

Yes tank was old enough that I could not find a cap and had to fab one as well as welding in new petcock

That tank is so skinny from the rear it looks like you're just riding an engine with 2 weeks :)

You are planning on new TIRES, I hope? And maybe a set of new brake hoses? Both look original, and the tires are into the wear-bars on both ends.

    What Fitz said.
    And hey, Nice work.
Had a little honda with a 48 degree rake. The front would flop like crazy in parking lots but on the highway, you hardly needed to hold on to the handlebars.

Ya tires are on order as well new brake lines, the tires are original and crackin not too safe. In the praking lot the tire does tend to flop but going down the road straight and true.

I'm thinking more likely a 1972 ish enduro tank HT/RT/DT The enduro's didn't come along until 1968/69 and the hump was more on the second gen enduro's .

Looks a lot like a 72 CT yammie tank.

For what its worth if others are interested in finding one.

Heyooooooh. I am loving this one boss. I have got to hear it or at least have you tell me how it sounds. That is the biggest thing holding me back right now.. Ive heard these engines dont produce such a great sound once the pipes are cut how id like to cut em. I have built only a few xs650's and never a 4 cyl xj. Please man, let me hear that Beauty. Any you tube vids? I LOVE YOUR BIKE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

I will attempt a vid this weekend and try to post it. It sounds loud sitting on it but my buddies say it is not bad going away. I work with a ton of guys at a prison and they all have harleys and I roll up. They all want the xj cause it is raw. So sweet to watch those guys on their 12000 dollar bikes wnt my 700 dollar bike :) and sounds better then theirs. Lol

I have not upped the jets yet, it starts good and idles and pulls hard and smooth. I will say that it does run leanso I will be following the formula that is posted on these forums to up the jets. I can say it will NEVER run as smooth as a stock air box. But it rus good enough for me. Chop weld and drop and don't worry about the nay sayers but always utilize tthe immense knowledge of some the local maxim mentors.

    Saw the video. NICE

Nice sound. Did you point the outer two header pipes away recently or was it always like that? I love it man. So are you going to ride it that way or get some straight pipes of some kind? Im diggin the shortness. Haha.
