I have this 80' XJ650 with low compression on one cylinder. Not a valve issue so something deeper. Audiblly it sounds very bad. Picked up a 850 triple tonight out of a 79' and it was (supposedly) a runner when pulled. Any of you guys ever do or hear of this being done? What am I looking at? Talk to me guys..your the XJ experts...give me some direction

What did you get the motor from? Did the XJ's even ever come in a 3 cylinder variant? Never heard of that...

No, the 850's were in the XS line only in 80' and 81', I was wrong on the 79'. It was also a shafty

I suppose the shaft length is probably a big one, wasn't thinking of that!

As long as the exhausts are not in line with the frame, its just engineering.

I guess I should have said-an XS triple will never fit into an xj "EASILY". Nothing is really impossible, just referring to motors actual dimensions, motor mount locations, electrics, etc, etc, etc. IMHO, it would just be too much work to be worth it. & If I remember correctly, the XS triples are prone to overheating. Best of luck to you whatever you decide to do. W.J.

If you have a title for the 850 frame - you build the 850.

If you JUST HAVE TO put the 850 into an XJ, then the alignment of the driveline and driveshaft components is so critical, that it would be easier to SPLIT BOTH FRAMES and graft the top half of the XJ to the lower frame and swingarm of the XS.

You may as well change the fork angle and build something REALLY radical for all that effort.

Or you source another XJ motor for $200.

Turns out its a 750. Its really a shame you can't get sell a motor like this but with location & shipping costs its really hard to do. Same goes for sourcing another 650 which is what I guess I'll attempt to do
