doesn't look like it is in that bad of shape...but looks can be deceiving. For $400 it looks like it could be a great deal.

I paid $400 for my Maxim and got a hell of a deal. The worse thing I had to do on my is the carbs. The engine was solid. As long as the previous owner took care of the engine, you will be holding on to keep from falling off.

One thing I would worry about is that on one line the seller is saying that it's a strong runner and then on another line that is much smaller, it says that it's not running and being sold for parts.

    And I'll chip-in with this:

If that bike DON'T come with SOME KIND of TITLE -- Either, Clear Title or Salvage Title ...

    DON'T PAY FOR IT!
Tell the guy YOUR LAWYER said ...

"The Money is being held by him, to be placed IN ESCROW, until he contacts you ... for me ... regarding this sale of a Motor Vehicle. And, whereas the language does not specifically say the transfer is WITHOUT Title, it is therefore understood that the Vehicle is transferred WITH Valid Title. Absent Title the Motor Vehicle transfer and your CONTRACT is Null and Void for SELLER deliberately OMITTING -- NO TITLE -- in the language and description off the Vehicle in question."

If the SELLER voids the Contract there will be NO Party Harmed and NO reason to petition the Court for a Judgment. If the SELLER fails to void the contract ... Council will petition for a ruling based on Common Law with losing Party responsible for all related Court Costs and Fees.

Looks like a good deal to me. It looks like a good project bike (if your into modifiying things like some of us)
I paid $300 for mine (identical to that one) and it ran like crap (when I could get it started)
I figured I would use it for a parts bike, till I decided to replace the carbs and got it running. They are fast (enough for me anyway) and I'm sure if it runs right, it will surprise you. The speedometer only goes up to 85 (you will be able to bury the needle in 3rd gear) so you never do know just how fast it will go unless you check it with radar (that's easy to find when you don't intend to find it! 8O)

I say its a good deal in you can get the title. If not then you got an alright parts bike to sell the parts off of. You could make your money back from the parts.

I do hope you can get the title though, I hate to see these bike torn apart for parts.

    Good luck,

I have one just like this. It's a great bike and if you can make it legal and it runs, you did well.

If you can't make it legal, I suspect that you could part it out for what you paid. The problem with that is you'll have parts left over that no one wants and they will be an albatross.

The add is a bit suspicious though. It's not listed as a motorcycle. Just as an item under eBay motors. Kind of seems like the guy's hiding something.

I hope it works out for you.

    There you go.

Someone else thought that the ad was suspicious.
    So will a Judge!
I'd pay the guy with Monopoly Money ... and tell him the Cash isn't Legal for use in the USA!

The sellers feed back isn't great either. check his negatives. I probably would never bid on one of his auctions. The fact that he made his disclaimer so small is a big red flag also. Good Luck

    Josh:

If you wind-up with a bike and NO title ... Get as much history on the bike as you possibly can.

Someplace ... there MUST be a Title ... or, at least a trail to someone who HAD Title and can apply for a Dupe.

Since your in Massachusetts ... we can work together on getting it on-the-road.

    Hey, Everybody ...

    Good News!
The bike Josh bought comes with a Title.
Josh lives not far from me in Massachusetts!

I guess I have to do a Private Carb Clinic and a once-over lightly for our New Guy Josh ...

Then ... he'll know what a good deal he got.
Of course, I'll make him do all his own wrenching!

You rock Rick! Great way to bring a new XJ'er into the fold!
I hope the problems are few and the joy complete, for Josh mostly.

I looked through some of the sellers other auctions. Looks like he is primarily selling used parts. Occasionally he has listed a vehicle not in running order with the same disclaimer. Looks like he used the same boilerplate for the Seca.

If the engine/tranny is in decent shape you got a deal. I suspect he may have hosed himself by using the boilerplate he uses for scrap vehicles. Hope for your sake I am right.

I look forward to hearing how this comes out.......

Hello everyone....I really like my new bike...I picked it up on saturday. Had to pay him another $100 for a new title. So its $500 all together..The guy tried to start the bike, But the battery was dead....When I got it home I charged the battery put fresh oil and gas, Pushed the start button and she fired right up!!..Very LOUD. Almost no exhaust at all. Completely rotted. I drove it aroud my yard a few times..It only runs with the choke on ..And I noticed that one of the header pipes is not as hot as the others?
The bike has been left outside in the rain and snow for god knows how long......

Ouch, sounds fishy that he didn't advertise the availability of the title to begin with. I'm not sure I'd want to deal with a manuver like that. Seems like a used car salesman.

If there is a "Sleazy Bastard Scale" and the scale is from 1 - to - 100 ... I'd have to give that guy a grade in the Mid - 90's!

    Why not 100?

Because the Bastard could have held the Title Hostage for more than the extra hundred-dollar bump.
Worse ... if the guy was a real 100% Sleazy Bastard ... he could have sold the Title to somebody else ... making him a "Sleazy (double bad-word) Bastard"

Then, one guys got the bike -- the Other Guy's got the Title and they have to fight-it-out.

If there's no latent defect, if the bike just needs to be set-up and tuned ... our boy wins in-the-long-run.

My feeling is ... he's still got a good deal. We hope to make it a GREAT deal.

Sounds like the carbs need cleaning and adjusting. If it were me I'd put a lot of carb cleaner in a little gasoline and run it until the carbs were sure to have it in there (10 minutes around the yard should do it). I'd then gently seat the idle mixture screws and back them out 4 turns. Run it another 10 minutes (you might not need the choke now). Let it sit for a few days.....

Put in some fresh spark plugs. Reset the idle mixture screws to 3 turns out. Fill the tank up with plain gasoline. Run some more. See if it will run without the choke after 5 minutes. Check to see if all the pipes are getting hot.

If it doesn't run without the choke, or if all the pipes aren't getting hot see RickO's post on carb cleaning. Check the carb holders for cracking or brittleness while you have the carbs off.

He practically lives within walking distance. If he can roll-in with the bike, somehow (when it's nice and sunny and we can work without the kerosene heaters) ... we can just "Pluck the Magic Twanger" and get "Froggy" to make it go good.

(For $25,000 and the right to come-back, next week ... What is the origin of "Pluck the Magic Twanger"?)
