I swapped motors and cleaned the carbs, when I started the bike I was able to dial in the idle but then once. I got the motor warm and shut it off it did not want to start? Also when I give it throttle the revs like to hangg before slowly lowering, new throttle cable,. Could I just have a small intake leak? Also do these bikes have to have the oi filter gasktet changed on every oi change? Thanks

How well did you clean the carbs? The enrichment circuit could be plugged up causing hard start. Have you sprayed carb cleaner through the enrichment passages inside the float bowl? It should shoot out like a supersoaker.

IMO unless you have a monstrous intake leak it should still start up. I change the gaskets every other oil change on the same intervals as the filter. I always assumed that filters came with the gaskets. No reason not to put them on.

I will try the enrichment thing and then go from there. As far as the gasket goes I am speaking of the gasket that is on the filter housing not the filter itself,

FRAM CH6003 filters come with both the large o-ring for the housing and the small one for the "bolt."

Some filters only come with one, some with none.

Ya I wil have to order one cause I am seepin oil everywhere. I sprayed starter fluid on the intakes, between carbs and head, and when I squirted the one to the far right th rpms climbed. Any ideas material wise for applying a skimcoat to patch the air leak?

I used RTV Ultra Black. Its cheap and holds up decently.

I first coated just the spots with cracks, but I ended up removing it and sanding down all the boots and coating them all, making sure to gently bend the boots with cracks and force a little bit of RTV in there.

Keep in mind that no silicone is impervious to gasoline, and gasoline will always win. But in the mean time, RTV seems to hold up.

I forgot to mention that some people wrap the entire joint with a rubber inner-tube tire. They say it looks cleaner. I think the RTV looks pretty good without it, but that would be another layer of protection.

Buying those crazy expensive boots are the only surefire fix.

Yes, the boots are expensive, but they are worth it. I struggled and struggled with old boots and finally bought new ones ... oh what a difference! Assembly is much, much easier and it is far easier to get a good seal with the new boots. Given the amount of time and aggravation dealing with the old ones? It was $50 very well spent.

Just go and buy the gasket. It's easy to change and I would suspect when you remove the rubber intake manifold from the head you will find the gasket is shot.

I tried to just repair the craked and leaking boot on mine, and it just doesn't work. Get new intake boots, and you and your XJ will be much happier.

Yes, any parts store will carry RTV. I agree with the others though: I think you are barking up the wrong tree trying that. You will be so much happier if you get a new set from Chacal.
