Blinkers and brakelight not working

    New to the forum. My blinkers and brake light are not working looking for possible causes. It is a 1982 650 maxim.

    all fuses seem to be working when i pull them out one by one but i have been looking and it seems from looking around i need to replace the fuse box so my problem might be in there. Can anybody point me to a fuse box that works well for the bike.

    PM member chacal, he has a nice little blade style box that fits in the original location, for around $10

    Ok changed my fuse box and that did not fix the problem if i disconnect the back blinkers the front ones light up solid when i turn the blinkers on and neither the front or back brake light up the brake light
    EDIT found the front brake light switch is not on the bike. Sorry about all the questions just bought the bike and trying to figure out how to get it roadworthy again

    1. Test Bulbs
    2. Test Sockets
    > Spring Loaded Contact Platforms not stuck
    > Not overloaded with Grease

    3. Test for Current
    > Ck for Power to and From Fuses
    > Ck for Power to and From Switches
    > Ck Color Codes Match
    > Ck Grounds are good.

    Hmmm - models vary a bit but most problems are pretty similar.

    Do the tests Rick says and report back more information. If someone has crossed wires at the back, we can't figure it out without more input. Do you have a multimeter or any other electrical checker ?

    Signals not working is usually BULBS.
    Followed by:
    Fuse Panel, Switch and Alt. Brushes.
    If the Bulbs Test OK; you Trace the Circuit all the way from the Battery to each Light.
    You need a 12 Volt Test Light.
    Extent the GROUND Wire with a Jumper so you can move-about without unhooking the Ground.

    Test for JUICE at the Fuse Panel.
    Across the Fuse.
    At the Pigtail to the Control inside the Headlight.

    Following the Path to each Light and Device.

    As you go along the route, ... look for places that the PO might have worked on the Wiring and done a crude repair.

    ::: Tech Tip :::
    • Tape or Shrink Wrap most of the Probe on the Test Light to prevent a Short when Probing for Current within Bulb Sockets.
    • Tape a strip of leather to your Index Finger to allow you to Probe separate wires without stabbing yourself with the Test Light Probe.
