Is the middle drive of the XJ650 lubricated with engine/transmission oil or by a separate system? Could not find any information regarding maintenance of the middle drive.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Absolutely no maintenance - the 7 OZ of motor oil in the middle gear cavity gets replaced upon running after a fresh oil change.

Adding to what TIMEtoRIDE said, not only is it not necessary, it is highly inadvisable due to the fact that the middle gear drain plug is in an awkward place and if it breaks off when you attempt to remove it, it's a big job to fix it. (And it is soft and breaks easily!) Don't do it in spite of what the manual says!
