    Hey,
Just joined this forum to help aide in putting my dad's '81 xj650 Maxim back together. He took the carbs out to clean.... 5 years ago and we could only find 3 out of the 4 carbs. Found a guy selling a carb set from an '80 xj650 maxim, just wanted to know if that would work on an '81?
    Thanks!

There is no difference between the 2 years, so the answer to your question is yes.

Glad to help, be sure to check out the warnings regarding the brakes, and the exhaust/intake valve adjustments. You have a great machine there and we all want you to be safe while riding this bike; or even if you're planning on selling it. On the rear brakes, the friction material that is bonded to the shoe can become un-bonded, resulting in a lock up situation. The issue with the front brake is that the hose can rupture, both of these issues are caused by aging parts, granted these are to some extent rare, but they happen often enough for a warning to be put out. On the valves, as these engines wear, the clearances decrease between the shim and cam lobe.
If the valves are neglected, you risk a burnt exhaust valves as well as lowered engine compression.
