I recently bought an '82 xj650 Seca that would start and run, but needed a little work (rusted gas tank, cracked intake boots) I took it all apart, sealed the tank and put on fresh new boots and now it won't start. The petcock was leaking so I took that apart and cleaned it up, now it doesn't leak but it didn't change how the engine's acting.
It has a new battery, the spark-plugs look good, and a tank-full of new gas but still won't turn over. I think it might not be getting fuel?
I've done work on cars but this is my first bike.
    Any ideas?

Check battery fully charged - if it's down even a bit it won't start.
Have you checked sparks present at each plug?
Have you checked float levels (clear tubing attached to drain stub on bowls will show you levels)?
Have you re-connected vacuum pipe (between fuel tap and inlet stub)?
Have you tried to start it with fuel tap switched to "prime"?

Daft question, but you did remove the fuel tap assy from the tank prior to sealing? - ie, you haven't sealed the filter?

    Update:
It started! I'm not sure what changed, but it started right up after I let it sit for an hour or so. It was idling at 4000-5000 rpm, so I adjusted the idle down to about 1500rpm.
Now when I start it it runs idles great but when I put it in gear it has barely enough power to move the bike until it gets to 2500 or so rpm then it has full power.

I haven't done anything with the carbs yet, I'm afraid to mess up the sync or something.

There's a long list of possibilities.
But, since it ran before you did the Manifolds, ... here's a few things too check.

Try giving it a shot of Starting Fluid.
This is the "Pop / No Pop Test"
If she pops, ... its a Fuel related deal.
    No Pop. Ignition (probably).

The Tank and Carbs were off.
    PRIME the Carbs.
Put the Petcock on PRI for :45 sec.
Give it a snort of Ether.
    Try it.

    Test the Petcock.
If you put-on a Inline Filter, ... make sure its:
    > Porous
    > Correctly oriented
    > Not "Air Bound"

Then, ... make sure you got gas.
    • the Hoses to the Petcock are correct
    • the Fuel Line isn't KINKED someplace.

    Another Update:
This time my float bowls were empty, I turned it to Prime for a little bit and that solved the problem, starts right up but still idles unevenly, so I cleaned the carbs last night and discovered a broken Float needle that I'll be replacing. Hopefully that's the last of the problems for now!
Thanks for the suggestions and wisdom everybody.
