I have a 83 xj750 maxim, and I am currently waiting on my cd and maint guide. I need to change the oil in the crank and in the shaft. Can anyone tell me what the spec are on the two levels? What is suggested for the bike? If someone could let me know I would appericate it. Thanks

You should have a sight glass on the side of the bike. My oil quantity is cast on the clutch cover near the oil filler hole (2500cc). Best guess is pour in 2 and 1/4 quarts with the bike on the center stand and turn over the motor a few times to prime the pump. Let it sit about 5 minutes and top off. Your rear gear oil should just come up to the bottom of the threaded portion of the filler hole. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. That does help, I did see the site window, now should that be full, I did not see any lines on it. And were do I find the oil filter? I was going to replace that as well.

You know where the drain plug was that you undid to release the oil? The oil filter is in that "bump" thing right above and to the front of it. (Duh...pardon the technical terms; I'm pretty new at this mechanic stuff! )

Jazz is right on the ball, the oil filter is housed in a finned bowl shaped cover on the front of the engine between all of the exhaust down pipes. There should be a 13mm bolt head sticking out of it. Be very careful about tightening it, it will seize in the mount making future removal very difficult! This should be tightened no more than eleven foot pounds according to the manual. As far as the oil markings, they are cast into the case on the right side of the sight glass. There are two of them, showing high and low marks. Hope that this helps.
