Purchased this bike from a guy who put a cobbed push start button on the side of the bike because he couldn't get the original start button on the handlebars to work. I took his off and I'm determined to figure out why the original starter button isn't working. I found a black ground (traced back to where it bolts on to the frame) 12 gauge wire that connects to nothing. It was balled up and crammed in with the other wires.

My starter relay is not what is supposed to be on the bike. It has two big terminals and two small terminals. Currently I have 3 wires that connect to the relay. One that goes from a big terminal to the + battery, one that goes from the big terminal to the starter itself, and one that goes from the small terminal to the starter button on handlebars (blue/white). Cannot figure out why this bike isn't even trying to start.

Possible solutions? I do have a voltmeter so I can check the voltage between circuits.

Separate question: Since the previous owner put a basic start button from Napa on there, I was wondering if someone could tell me how to do this again so that I can see if the bike will actually start/run. He assured me it did but didn't have a battery to show me, before I do any work such as clean out gas tank/drain fluids/etc I just want to know that I'm not looking at hundreds of dollars worth of work. If someone can post a diagram that will show me how to hook up a simple push button and what I connect it to I will greatly appreciate it.

I have been to a motorcycle shop a few times with questions but he wants to do it himself for $250 so he wont tell me what to do. I've even brought in a wiring diagram of an XJ700N (practically the same except cooling system) and he didn't even look at it. Still insisted that my starter relay needed an orange or red wire for it to work.

Any info will be helpful. First bike, and I want to learn how to work on it myself so i'm not paying $75/hour + jacked up parts prices.

    Thanks in advance.

Bump is forum speak. It's something you do to an old(er) post on a forum to bring it back to the top of the list and hopefully get a new set of eyes on your question.

That being said, you're essentially asking for help on how to hotwire your bike, I think you may have some trouble get people to discuss that in a public forum. Your best bet is to get a set of wiring diagrams and start tracing wires.
