Carb Help

    Ok so I just rebuilt my carbs on my 82 Maxim. I got the bike started. When it was running i noticed that the exhaust from carbs 1&2 was cold. Exhaust from 3&4 was hot. I put my hand over the rear opening on carb 1 and nothing happened but when i did the same on the other 3 it bogged down.
    Plus it will not stay running without the choke on. Any help will be appreciated.

    It is a 82 650 Maxim. It also has the Hitachi carbs.

    Did you do a running sync on the carbs after you put them back on the bike? Has all the other carb work been done like jets cleaned, float levels checked, bench sync?

    Hi there spikypsyki!

    1. How long have you had the bike? Miles?
    2.Were all cylinders firing before cleaning the carbs, or have you had it running before?
    3. If you haven't had it running before now have you checked your valve clearances and checked your compression? (you can't properly sync the carbs without your valves in spec)
    4. And as mlew asked, the jets cleaned thoroughly (carb cleaner sprays forcefully through all passages), float levels WET checked within spec, clunk test, bench synced?
    5. On the cold cylinders do you have spark? And are they gapped to spec?

    I'm sure the forum Wizards could better help you with those questions answered.

    To me it sounds like a possible plug / wire / coil issue ... definitely test for spark, but I would hate to speculate without knowing more.

    Also, smell your plugs on C1 and C2...do they smell like gasoline?

    The coils fire cylinders 1/4 and 2/3 so you can probably rule that out.

    It sounds like an incomplete or sloppy carb service and as above, you probably need to check your valve clearances.

    There is a lot to be done to get everything adjusted correctly, I suspect you've missed quite a bit of it.

    -Valves in spec (critical step.)
    -Carbs religiously clean, completely disassembled, o-rings replaced, etc. Slides go "clunk."
    -Float levels "wet set" using fuel and the clear tube method (critical step.)
    -Good accurate bench sync.
    -Running vacuum sync with YICS blocked.

    IN ORDER and don't rush or skip over any.

    Your carbs aren't truly clean or your float levels are way off.

    You can clean your carbs and think they are clean but, you need to check every passage, inspect every part, most important **** wet set your float levels****
    The reason is the fuel level in the float bowls need to be just right to make the carbs work right.

    How do i block the YICS?

    With a YICS blocking tool; or you can use an oil-soaked cotton rag twisted into a tight rope and pulled into the passage with a piece of stiff wire.
