Hi, I've had my 81 xj650 midnight maxim for about a year now, but it has only been running for a couple of months out of that time. It is my first bike and I really like it but it can be frustrating. I have had to clean the carbs multiple times (had to learn what it really means to clean them). I'm still having trouble adjusting them. It loses power when I try to open the throttle going 65 mph or so. Reading about running it at a higher rpm has helped but it is still lacking. I've also had the throttle cable and clutch cable break, and the front brake seize up. This website has helped me learn a great deal about my bike. Thanks to everyone for their posts.

Glad you are safe and sound after having the clutch cable break and the throttle too. I just gotta ask.. where you riding when the clutch cable snapped? Where you still able to shift to neutral and brake? How scary! I will re-assess the condition of my clutch cable immediately!!

Yea I was on my way to work and about 60 miles from home. So I just shifted without the clutch and let it die at a stop sign, then restart. Luckily I had just read that, although not recommended you can shift without the clutch in a pinch, especially at higher speed. Most of my driving is open road, since I work in the middle of nowhere.
